After our morning spent in Jamestown we headed to Washington D.C. Traffic getting into the city led to a last minute change of plans. We opted to visit Arlington Cemetery on the way in instead of coming back later in the week.

When you pause for a quiet moment to look around there is a heaviness and gratefulness that come with being in this place. We had some great discussions about our freedom and the cost of that freedom.
It was important to me that the girls saw the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We arrived right at the end of the Changing of the Guards, and when the steps cleared out we took a seat and waited for the next change 30 minutes later. When we planned this trip I didn't even think about the fact that we would be in DC for Memorial weekend. It turned out to be an unexpected treat in many ways. More crowds, but I can't think of a more appropriate place to be as we reflect on what Memorial Day
really means.
